An early stage biotech startup with the moonshot goal to give people with extreme vision impairments their sense of sight back.
The Science Eye device helps restore sight for patients with severe blindness due to photoreceptor loss by reestablishing visual communication with the brain via the retina. We designed the seamless user experience by developing the physical custom eyewear device with the accompanying implants while maintaining an aesthetic and comfortable design. Additionally, the Card79 team crafted detailed and informative illustrations that visually communicates the complex inner workings of the Science eye by simplifying intricate concepts.
THE BRIEF
Science is a company that is in fearless pursuit of medicine’s hardest problems. Their mission is to develop advanced medical technology at the frontier of humanity’s capabilities and understanding. We worked with them in 2022 to help them develop the Science Eye, a combination wearable and implantable system that would offer new hope for patients with serious blindness due to photoreceptor loss.
MY ROLE
Industrial Design | Illustration | Physical Prototyping
PROCESS
Creating the Science Eye involved extensive research and analysis. Our designers generated a range of concepts through brainstorming and ideation sessions, refining these ideas through detailed drawings and renderings. The prototypes were quickly created, tested, and evaluated for usability, comfort, and overall performance as the project progressed toward the eyewear device, with feedback incorporated into subsequent iterations.
The Science
Creating the Science Eye involved extensive research and analysis. Me and the rest of Card79 design team generated a range of concepts through brainstorming and ideation sessions, refining these ideas through detailed drawings and renderings. The prototypes were quickly created, tested, and evaluated for usability, comfort, and overall performance as the project progressed toward the eyewear device, with feedback incorporated into subsequent iterations.
We delved deep into the scientific principles underlying the Science Eye, such as optogenetic gene therapy, high-resolution display film technology, and the communication between the implant and the eyewear device. This comprehensive understanding of the science behind the device, help inform how to illustrate the seamless transmission of data and power between the implant and eyewear.
Surgical Process
The development of the Science Eye required us to thoroughly understand the surgical procedures involved in implanting the device and illustrating the complex features and communication between the components.
More to come
With the project still in its early stage of development, more project outcomes are yet to be released. Contact me for more details regarding our design team's contributions to this project.
